The first comprehensive portrait and record of Louis Michel Thibault at the Cape of Good Hope in the turbulent years between 1783 and 1815. The book is composed of Thibault's letters and reports written to private clients and officials of the Dutch East India Company, and the Batavian and British Governments, and of their replies.

The Addendum includes the author's search for the young Thibault in Europe, a period of his life which was veiled in obscurity, and now for the first time a full portrait emerges.
