The author, an Austrian, met Presidents Kruger and Steyn during visits to the Boer capitals prior to joining the republican army at the western front near Jacobsdal. As an accredited war correspondent Sternberg was allowed free movement within the war zone. He gives a description of camp life on the Modder River, recounts a visit to Boer forces surrounding Kimberley and reports events from Gen. Cronje's camp near Paardeberg. The author was taken prisoner at Paardeberg drift shortly before Cronje's surrender." - Hackett: South African War Books, p. 60.
