The lengthy 17-page introduction written by Johannes J. Smith is famous for its strong plea to the reader that Afrikaans is a language in its own right. Professor Smith would later become the first editor of the longest-running Afrikaans magazine Die Huisgenoot, which has been in print since 1916.
