The history of the town that became the gateway to the northern Transvaal during the Anglo-Boer War. The infamous Breaker Morant spent some time in a Pietersburg prison during that period.

A very hard-to-find photo of the decapitated head of Chief Magoeba can be seen on page 54. Perhaps for the reason that it is deemed too gruesome it has often been excluded from works of general history, which makes its appearance in this town history quite surprising. The caption reads "A photographer was present when the Swazis presented the head of Magoeba to General Joubert and he took this macabre and rare photo."
