The report details the findings of the Bushman Survey, which was conducted by Silberbauer, the Bushman Survey Officer, over a period of six years (1958–1964). The study focused primarily on the G/wi and G//ana groups in the Central Kalahari.
The Bechuanaland government commissioned the report to assess the status and future of the San population as the country prepared for independence which occurred in 1966. It provided the colonial administration with data upon which to base policy regarding the integration, welfare, and land use of the San people.
