Publisher's blue cloth binding with silver titles to spine.

xxvi + 360pp. With 332 illustrations. Foreword by General Jan Smuts (being one of the estimated 60 to 70 he wrote in his lifetime).

'Steam navigation to South Africa dates back to 1825 and the present narrative provides a complete survey of subsequent developments on the Cape route down to the present day. Besides describing the establishment of the steamship lines and early rivalries for the mail and passenger traffic, the author also deals with notable events of the passage during times of peace and war. Shipwrecks and disasters are included and a short 'life-history' is given of every important liner which has been engaged in the trade.' - editor's note.
