Piet Beukes, pioneering South African journalist and former commentator on international affairs, first came in close contact with Field Marshall Jan Smuts while serving as deputy director of the Bureau of Information during the Second World War. After the War he was appointed editor-in-chief of the three newspapers supporting Smuts, and in 1946 he accompanied Smuts to the inaugurul session of the United Nations, near New York.
