The author, Herbert Melville Guest (1853–1938), was a pioneering printer, newspaper owner, and publisher in Klerksdorp, Transvaal. His Anglo-Boer War books were published during the war when Klerksdorp was "practically in a state of siege". He became the first mayor of Klerksdorp in 1910.
