First edition: 497 pages, foxing on the preliminary pages, uny cut edges with foxing, blue cloth boards which are slightly scuffed, titled gilt on the spine, a very good copy.

Mendelssohn (Sidney) South African Bibliography vol 2 pages 439 -440: The writer states that " no attempt has been made to write a detailed account of the work of each corps, but it has been the author's aim to give a fair idea of the value of the services of each. Where it has been possible to find or get the views of a British regular officer on the worth of such services, these views are given." It is recorded that the number of South African irregulars was about 50,000, and the contributions from over-sea Colonies 29,928, " thus we had in the field about 80,000 men furnished by the Colonies and Dependencies of Britain."
