The book chronicles the military lives of General Sir Walter Norris Congreve and his son Lieutenant William La Touche Congreve, both Victoria Cross recipients. It emphasizes their early military service in the Second Boer War (1899–1902) in South Africa, focusing particularly on Sir Walter's courageous role at the Battle of Colenso, where he earned the Victoria Cross for repeatedly rescuing artillery guns under heavy fire near Ladysmith. Sir Walter also participated in major campaigns including the relief of Kimberley, and advances on Bloemfontein and Pretoria.

His son William later gained distinction in World War I, continuing the family's legacy of bravery. The Boer War's harsh conditions, guerrilla warfare, and significant battles such as Colenso, Kimberley, and Ladysmith are highlighted as formative experiences that shaped both men’s military careers .

General Sir Walter Norris Congreve VC KCB MVO DL (20 November 1862 – 28 February 1927) was 37 years old, and a captain in The Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort's Own), British Army during the Second Boer War when he won the VC.
