First Edition, third issue (Seventh Thousand) of the two volume edition. The first appearance of the word “evolution” in works by Darwin. In good condition. Both volumes show heavy signs of wear, with bumped corners, but are complete. The covers of Volume I are becoming separated from the binding and there is water damage to the cover of volume II and the binding is becoming exposed. Wear to the head and tail of the spines of both volumes, with a small split to the head of the spine of both volumes. Pencil marks in margins scattered throughout, highlighting lines of interest to previous owner. Previous owners name in pencil to the front fly leaf of both volumes with place and date : W.C.Crofts Adel August 1871. W.C.Crofts was an English Architect and entrepreneur who was a photographic pioneer.
