THE GERMAN OFFICIAL ACCOUNT OF THE WAR IN SOUTH AFRICA
2 volumes, 280 + 374 pages (225 x 155 mm), 17 folding coloured maps, 8 plates. Bound in original decorated green cloth with gilt lettering; neatly covered with "schoolbook plastic" to protect the covers, with no tape touching the book itself.
Condition: Overall wear, acceptable spotting, slight browning of some pages, and minor bumping to corners on both volumes—no damage or wear exceeding what is expected of books of this age. The binding is sturdy, and the gilt on the emerald boards remains bright. Both volumes are in overall good condition. Includes an extremely neat and stylish signature of the first owner on the front free endpaper (ffep) of both volumes.
According to Mendelssohn's South African Bibliography (Vol. 2, pp. 590-1), the work is characterized by thorough, fair, and unbiased German scholarship. Despite criticizing British tactics, it is praised by the translator for its conciseness, impartiality, and lucidity, making it a valuable resource for both the public and experts interested in the South African War.
