xix, 420 pages. illustrations (mostly black & white & seven colour plates), portraits, frontispiece, five maps. Paperback with slight rubbing to edges.

Wright's account starts when the country, now known as Zambia, had no defined borders in the late nineteenth century and ends with Zambia gaining independence in 1964. The NRP were then disbanded and became part of the Zambian police force. Wright focuses on the NRP's role in the two world wars. He also addresses the early days prior to 1914 and the period in the years just before independence.
