The J.L.B. Smith Institute of Ichthyology was founded in 1968 at Rhodes University, after J. L. B. Smith’s death, to continue and expand fish research in South Africa. The institute grew from a university-based ichthyology unit into a major national research and museum institution. It gained independence in 1980, and later became the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB) .

The book traces the institute’s first 50 years, highlighting its founding, the leadership of Margaret Smith, the move into a purpose-built facility, and its evolution into a nationally important centre for fish research, collections, and aquatic biodiversity . It also places the institute within the broader legacy of J. L. B. Smith and the development of modern ichthyology in southern Africa

The book was published by the J.L.B. Smith Institute of Ichthyology in collaboration with the Royal Society of South Africa.
