A most interesting copy of the first edition of this work with an Introduction by William Plomer. It is inscribed by Plomer to Zelda Friedlander on the front free endpaper, which is also signed by the author and bears the Ex Libris rubber stamp of Peter Horwitz.

Zelda Friedlander was a South African researcher, author and biographer who published works on Smuts and Olive Schreiner (A Garland for Olive Schreiner - which interestingly also was introduced by William Plomer). Peter Horwitz was Friedlander's nephew and seems to have inherited a part of Friedlander's library. Several letters from Friedlander to Plomer are in the Plomer archive at Durham University, as are some from Richard Freislich, the author of this book.

William Plomer (1903 1973), the important South African born writer and poet whose first book was the landmark novel, Turbott Wolfe. He also famously founded the short lived literary periodical Voorslag with Roy Campbell. Amongst his many other achievements, including writing the librettos of several Benjamin Britten operas, he is today recognised for advising the publishing firm Jonathan Cape to publish the James Bond novels of Ian Fleming, several of which Plomer edited. Fleming then dedicated his Bond novel Goldfinger to Plomer and Plomer subsequently did the oration at Fleming's funeral.

A very good copy in the original green cloth in a good only dustwrapper which, although essentially complete, has a fair amount of wear and some chips and tears with internal tape reinforcements. Please see Lots 337 and 341 in the Modern First Edition category for two other William Plomer items.
