From the Preface: "The American-English and the Boer-English wars are exact parallels but that one was a rebellion of a colony, and the other the attempt of a free people to maintain their independence.

"The war is now conducted in the same manner as that of 1776, the same base calumnies of the enemy, the same alleged barbarities, and atrocities against a foe without councel before the world's tribunal, the same proclamations alternately offering glowing terms of surrender or threatening dire consequences in case of further resistance, the same burning, and desolation of homes and the same cruelty, murder, confiscation of property, in the furtherance of their national desires. They now use the savage Kaffirs against the Boer as they used the Indian against the colonials... and they are attempting the same extermination of an independent race by fire, famine and outrage, with the same ultimate result - a new and young republic that will spring forth from the ashes of desolation".
