[xii], 308 pages, [LACKS the advertisement pages], recently rebound in full dark calf, several paper repairs in quire B, light toning, very good.

Collection of writings by Richard Steele published shortly after the death of Queen Anne and soon after he had been knighted by George I in April 1715, though written previously and first published in pamphlets and periodicals. Steele had found himself in hot water among the Tory establishment for his ardent support of the Hanoverian succession. Yet, less than two years after he was expelled from the House of Commons for his 1714 publication The Crisis on this subject being declared seditious, George of Hanover ascended to the throne and showered him with rewards for his support. In many ways a triumphant publication vindicating his early pro-Hanoverian position, and demonstrates how early 18th century pamphlets and periodicals were taking a greater and greater role in shaping public opinion. Two names inked to title page. ESTC T43979.
