Desmond Tutu was ordained in 1961 and by 1976 was elected Anglican Bishop of Lesotho. In 1986 he became Archbishop of South Africa and in 1987 President of the All Africa Conference of Churches. He was a thorn in the side of apartheid structures all his adult life and famously hosted Nelson Mandela at his home in Cape Town on the night of his release. In 1984 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Allen, a journalist by profession, was the Archbishop's Media Secretary for a lengthy period. An important book on South Africa in the era of change.
