Jameson's life would be spared and the British Government would take up our cause, and see all just demands should be conceded to us, and that every person in Johannesburg would be protected from any punishment for what had been done. Now I distinctly say, with all the emphasis I can, that it was only upon these conditions that Johannesburg surrendered. I was present through it all, and heard both Sir Jacobus de Wet's and Sir Sidney Shippard's speeches."’
