Murrogh De. B. Nesbitt was a South African writer and pioneer in the field of rehabilitation of cripples. Born in 1898 and grew up in the Orange Free State; at the age of 13 he lost both his legs under a truck at the Jagersfontein diamond mine. Through sheer force of will, he not only rebuilt his own life, but became an athlete and taught many disabled people to lead a normal existence. The thoughts outlined in his bestseller, The Road to Avalon led to the establishment of a self-rehabilitation centre near Tulbagh, bearing the same name. Due to circumstances beyond his control, this business was later closed. However, Nesbitt continued his work in the Orange Free State and wrote a second book, Avalon Adventure. Died in 1959 near Port Elizabeth. (Rosenthal, Encyclopaedia of Southern Africa)
