SIGNED on the half-title page by the author Maria Wilman and the photographer Alfred Martin Duggan-Cronin, whose photographic work on the native peoples of South Africa in the early twentieth century is of profound significance.
'In certain parts of South Africa there are to be found upon the slopes and summits of boulder-strewn kopjes large numbers of primitive rock carvings of animals, signs, and symbols. All the carvings are not of the same date, and to some extent it is possible to make out a relative chronology among them. There are people who think that some of them must be assigned to a time as long ago as the late pleistocene period, while there are others who consider that they were all made within the last 500 years.
Up to the present no good corpus of reproductions illustrating a large group of these carvings has been collected and published, and most of the illustrations appearing in the archaeological literature of South Africa have been derived from such carvings as have been broken off and removed to museums. As a result no truly representative impression of the engravings as a whole could be obtained by the would-be student. Miss Wilman's new book, then, is just what has long been wanted. The reproductions are accompanied by a detailed explanatory text describing and discussing the engravings, as well as by a historical survey of previous discoveries and opinions.' - editor's note
