Stephen Taylor, in THE CALIBAN SHORE (2004, p. 264), describes this book as a key publication on the wreck of The Grosvenor. Carter was a painter who heard the story en route to India. His painting career failed on the sub-continent, but his account of the wreck published in 1791 was a best seller. Jacob van Reenen was a member of a twelve man expedition under J.A. Holtshausen who were sent to search for survivors. Captain Edward Riou was a Royal Navy officer who joined the navy at twelve. He served under Captain James Cook and was killed when in charge of a frigate squadron at the battle of Copenhagen.
