In 1885 Farini, an American adventurer, undertook to explore the Kalahari Desert in the company of his son, an artist and photographer, and Gert Louw, who was of  Khoi-San descent. Towards the end of their expedition, they came across what appeared to them to be the ruins of a mighty city, partially covered by sand.
