Torpedoes and Torpedo Warfare is a comprehensive book written by Charles William Sleeman that delves into the history and evolution of submarine warfare. The book provides a detailed account of the development of torpedoes and their use in naval warfare, from the early days of experimentation to the modern era.
This copy had a prominent former owner in Commodore Albert Hastings Markham with his bookplate on the front paste down and inscription on the verso of the front endpaper. Markham held several commands in the Royal Navy, one being that of the Torpedo School HMS Vernon. For the British Arctic Expedition of 1875–76 he was appointed second-in-command of HMS Alert under Captain Nares. Despite suffering from scurvy and being poorly clothed, he led a sledge-party to reach the highest latitude ever attained at the time (83°20′26″ N), a record that stood for 20 years. He was the author of numerous books about his explorations and is also remembered for designing the New Zealand flag.
