Anderson had been a colonial magistrate up to 1860. He then decided to devote himself to the exploration of the regions north of the Cape Colony. He prepared for his explorations through a series of shorter journeys in Natal and the Free State. He visited Bechuanaland, the Kalahari Desert, Namaqualand, Damaraland and Ovamboland, spending much time along the Orange River. He considered it important for the "Walvisch Bay" area and coastline to be annexed by the Cape Colony. He also gives an account of the geography of the Transvaal. See Mendelssohn vol. 1, p. 38-39.
