Original dark green board with gilt blocking to front board and CMR gilt vignette. Gilt lettering to spine. xvi plus 447 pages text. Halftitle. Frontispiece with tissue guard. Title. Introduction. Contents. List of Illustrations. Map. 16 sketches. 1 photograph. 2 maps (1 folding). 

Cloth of spine torn and repaired on one side but holding.Spine ends and boards worn. Some light foxing to end papers. Binding showing inside front spine paper but secure. 

"The narrative of twenty-five years of a life crowded with incident, stretching over a period which has seen some of the most momentous happenings in South Africa." The author joined the Cape Mounted Rifles, 1879, and saw service in Basutoland, the Cape Colony, and Matabeleland, etc, etc., while he contributes two chapters relating his experiences as a captain in Mounted Regiments of Irregulars in the South African War, 1899-1902.
