Summary from HeritageReads.com: "Willem Adriaan Van Der Stel, and Other Historical Sketches" by George McCall Theal is a compelling exploration of South African history through the lens of one of its notable figures, Willem Adriaan Van Der Stel, the controversial governor of the Cape Colony in the 17th century. The book offers a meticulous account of Van Der Stel's tenure, his conflict with the Dutch East India Company, and the impact of his policies on the colony. Theal adeptly weaves together biographical narrative and broader historical context, shedding light on social, economic, and political dynamics of the time.

In addition to Van Der Stel's story, Theal presents various other historical sketches that enrich the reader's understanding of South Africa's past. His thorough research and engaging prose make this work an essential contribution to South African historiography. Theal's ability to connect personal stories to larger historical themes ensures that readers gain a nuanced appreciation for this complex period.

The four historical sketches referred to in the title are:

1. Exploration by the Portuguese

2. Early European Voyages and Conflicts

3. Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel

4. Chronicles of the Great Emigration - in particular the two prominent leaders of the Great Trek, Louis Trieghard and Pieter Uys
