An account of the author's botanical expeditions to various parts of Africa. Hutchinson's background as a botanical specialist from Kew was well known, and in South Africa he was given a very friendly reception by eminent South African botanists. But it was his association with General Smuts, who was also a botanist of note, that makes this book so interesting. Smuts accompanied him in the Northern Transvaal and across the Limpopo to Zimbabwe, and in Tanganyika (Tanzania). Pages i-xii pp 1-686. Frontispiece portrait of General Smuts. Copiously illustrated with black-and-white photographs, sketches, line drawings of botanical details. Folding maps. Full page maps to indicate regional distributions and the regions visited by the author. Dark green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles on spine. Slightly scuffed at base of spine. Illustrated Dust jacket has cracked on folds but has been neatly repaired with brown and white paper reinforcements. Front and back endpapers are browned but the rest of the book has no apparent foxing. This is an unusually interesting book in Very Good condition.
