How it works

Register

A classic illustrated work, with plates by the author and frontispiece by his father, the famous landscape and portrait painter Sir John Everett Millais. The author travelled extensively in Africa, and published numerous works on the big game. The above work is famous for its evocative descriptions of the Veldt and the illustrations of big game, and life on the trail. The large folio format, superb illustrations and general quality make for an iconic picture of the life of adventure in late nineteenth century South Africa.

Folio size, original cream cloth, with pictorial design of antelope heads and title on front board, some fingering marking darkening lower corner as well some other marks on front cover, while the back cover displays a little age-marking.The book has been attractively recased and rebacked in brown calf. The condition of the textblock is  good and bright for its age, however some damp staining has seeped through from the spine onto the inside corner of some of the plates, none to any great degree. The worst instance is illustrated in the photos below. The paper of the frontispiece has cracked just below the illustration, but is holding. The plates only, have light foxing throughout due to a different quality of paper used, and there are two plates of which one has a marginal tear just extending into the illustration, while the other has a piece of the margin missing. There is an ownership dated 1896 in ink on the prelims, endpapers have been replaced.

x + 236 pages, with 13 electro etchings, 12 full-page plates from drawings and numerous text illustrations; The twelve etchings, 49 full-page engravings, and 88 illustrations in the text.
