An important Anglo-Zulu War publication as the author provides a detailed eyewitness account of the experiences of the 1st Battalion, 13th Light Infantry during the Anglo-Zulu War. It covers the regiment's 1877 movements, the 1879 invasion of Zululand, and highlights specific incidents, including the battles of Tolyana, Zlobanne, Kambula and Ulundi.
There are occasional short pencil notes in the text which appear to be from someone who was also involved in the campaign. When the author describes the death of Color-Sergeant Pegg, who died from a leg amputation after receiving a bullet wound in the thigh, the pencil note reads, "In 1935 we had a cairn erected on the farm Gonfangu on the Steelpoort to John Pegg, the first British soldier to be killed in the Transvaal 29-10-1878".
A very scarce publication, the author notes on the first page that he received only "hundreds of orders".
