An interesting and important catalogue of the private collection of Ida and F.W. Hosken. Many of the titles in the Hosken collection were used for reference in the South African Bibliography. The collection was sold at auction in 2001 and broke the record for the highest price achieved for a single collection.
Anna H. Smith, author and curator of the Africana Museum in Johannesburg, wrote in her introduction, "It is certain that other collectors and research workers will find this catalogue of value even if only to indicate that a particular item exists at all and is available in Johannesburg."
Ida and Frederick William Hosken were South African book collectors. Their collection was housed at "Copperhouse", their smallholding in Honeydew, which, at the time, was an area of agricultural holdings north of Johannesburg. F. W. Hosken served as a Flying Officer in the R.A.F. during WWII. He was part of 80 Squadron during the Greek campaign and is credited with 2 victories. He knew the legendary South African flying ace Pat Pattle and flew with him during that campaign.
