On 5th May 1753 Tobias Smollett was contracted to complete, by 1st August 1754, an anthology of travels in seven volumes, for which he would receive the considerable sum of 150 pounds; it was published anonymously in 1756 as A Compendium of Authentic and Entertaining Voyages, with Smollett later conceding that his contribution was limited.

Bound in full brown calf, gilt lettered morocco label on gilt tooled spine with five raised bands. Corners are bumped and scuffed with Vol II damaged with some loss to the leather. Some general wear throughout commensurate with age, but textblock clean.
