Dennison was an old colonial hand and veteran of many campaigns on the fringes of white expansion. He first "smelt powder" in the O.F.S.-Basotho War of 1865 and then in the Zulu War of 1879, the Sekukuni War of the following year and the First Boer War of 1880-1. This book deals with his experiences in the Anglo Boer War, beginning with the little-known siege of Kuruman. Taken prisoner when the town surrendered in January, 1900, he was held first at Vryburg then at the P.O.W. camp for British officers at Pretoria. During the guerilla phase he commanded his own corps of scouts, operating mainly from Kimberley and Vryburg. He was awarded the D.S.O.
