A Group of Four Original Watercolour Portrait Studies, as under, based on those of Lieut.-Col Charles Hamilton Smith, as prepared by him for publication.
On two folio sheets, each study is captioned faintly in pencil and measure approx. 12 by 10 cms.. The paper is watermarked 1846. (In good condition).
A. “Woman of Fernando Po “ “Cutthroat – Native of Fernando Po”.
B. “Jupiter , Negro East Coast of Africa” & “An Eboe”.
These watercolours were extracted from an album which stated that the artist was Dawe and they were after those of Charles Hamilton Smith. No further information appears available about Dawe except one reference to a painting of a Giraffe on the web, again after Smith. It is presumed that he was a student and assistant to Smith. He was a capable water-colourist.
Charles Hamilton Smith (1776-1859) first followed an army career and then devoted himself to natural history studies. His work is represented in the British Museum and Greenwich.
