This work first appeared in the Uganda Journal 1936-7. This 1938 edition was the first in book form.
Two fold-out maps of the botanical regions, 22 full-colour plates of Ugandan snakes, 18 full-page plates of line drawings of the shapes and markings on heads of snakes, 2 full-page diagrams of scale and shield patterns. Pages i-xxi; pp 1-362.
The book has been used in the field by conservationists and veterinary officers and shows signs of wear; some margin notes, many of them very interesting, some newspaper cuttings and the names of previous owners written and stamped.
In the original binding process pp 313-318 were bound in reverse order, which could explain why colour plate 23, listed as facing p 312, is missing.
Light beige cloth spine, grey-green paper-covered boards. Titles on paper labels on front and spine. Covers edgeworn, marked and corners bumped.
A thorough and complete account of the snakes of Uganda, by an expert in the field. Includes a systematic list of the snakes of Uganda; a description of the species, characteristics and habits, and snake-bite treatment; cultural aspects, snake worship, folklore and snake-eating tribes.
After production in Uganda, most of the books were shipped to London and stored in a warehouse which was later destroyed by German bombing. This seems to be the reason for the remarkable scarcity of this valuable reference.
