Housed in a custom built slip case made by master craftsman Peter Carstens covered with maroon coloured book cloth, hand marbled paper edges and leather trim.

Original red cloth covered boards with gilt titling and a bird decorative device on the spine and blind stamped decorations on the boards. Black end papers. vii prelims, list of plates, 342 pages and 14 hand coloured plates by J.G. Keulemans.

CONDITION DETAILS: The front paste down has the book plate of the late Birch Bernstein, who was a well known South African book collector. There is a pen name on the title page. The worn binding is masked by transparent sleeve and the slip case. The binding has a white paint mark on the side of the spine. The spine is sun faded and the binding is worn. Aside from this, an image of each illustration is provided to show that the hand coloured plates are in decent condition.
