Thomas Bewick is best known for The History of British of Birds.

His work has always been admired for its wood engravings.

In addition to the text woodcuts, the inclusion of small vignettes

dotted about the volumes have been a continual source of wonder

and delight for the reader. These small vignettes, known as tail-pieces

are sharply observed humorous traits of nature masterfully recreated

by a master craftsman.
