Quarto (255 x 185mm). 584 pages of text and illustrations. This chronological illustrated history of warfare from Ancient Greeks through World War II includes chapters on military thinking and ethics of war.

Throughout his 50 year military career, Montgomery studied military history and he ensured that his book is soundly based on historical findings, and he has brought to bear on the subject the judgement and interpretation of a great master of war.

Leadership runs like a golden thread through the book and the great commanders of the past are examined under a microscope. Military history is a subject that demands illustration and the text of this book is fully integrated with 35 maps, 18 battle plans and 16 weapon drawings and diagrams in two colours, over 190 illustrations in monochrome and 32 pages of superb full colour plates.

This is a unique and important book by a man many consider the greatest British commander since Wellington. This unique deluxe copy was specially bound in black morocco gilt on the spine and front and back boards, with edges gilt all round, with red silk endpapers.

It comes with matching morocco slipcase gilt on front and back, fleece lined inside. All executed lavishly by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. The original dust jacket is bound into the back of the book. This unique copy is inscribed by Montgomery on the French title page as follows:

I am delighted to see this first edition of A History of Warfare which has been specially bound in such a superb leather binding. The book, so bound, will be a noble addition to the owner’s library.
