Containing accounts of exploration beyond the Zambesi, on the River Chobe, and in the Matabele and Masona Countries, with full notes upon the natural history and present distribution of all the large mammalia.
It is observed in the Preface that since the issue of "Baldwins' book upon African hunting...now nearly twenty years ago, no work has been published which can be considered in any way as a guide for men about to visit the interior of South Africa in search of sport." This volume claims to supply the want of such a publication, and gives particular respecting the travels and adventures of the author from 1871 to 1880 in Bechuanaland, Mashonaland, Matabeleland, and the Transvaal, during which period Mr. Selous "led the life of a professional elephant hunter." The work contains a large amount of information respecting the fauna of the sub-continent, with many details for the benefit of sportsmen shooting in the regions traversed by the author.
