280 pages, original red gilt decorated cloth over bevelled boards, back dull, hinges strengthened with cloth, bookplate of the South African Archaeological Society on the front paste-down endpaper, some light soiling throughout the text, edges uncut.

Mendelssohn (Sydney) South African Bibliography, volume 1, pages 416-417, Das Neves who visited the Transvaal in 1860 in order to hunt elephant and trade in ivory, records his impressions of the Transvaal during this period. He describes his experiences hunting game including hippopotamus, lion, and buffalo, and he also records the oral history of local Shangaan and Swazi regarding the events surrounding the assassination of Dingane.

Czech (Dr. Kenneth) An Annotated Bibliography of African Big Game Hunting Books 1785 – 1999, (2011) page 75, ‘A Portuguese hunter and explorer, Das Neves set out from Lourenco Marques on an expedition into the Transvaal in 1860 to collect ivory and stimulate trade in Portuguese territory. He hunted hippopotamus on the river Save, also collecting buffalo and gazelle there. Near Zoutpansberg in the northern Transvaal, he hunted lion, buffalo and elephant, though the descriptions of the hunts are rather scant in detail,’
