The author was a Scottish missionary and traveller. The London Missionary Society sent him to the Cape in 1812 to inspect the mission stations. He set off from Cape Town calling in at Bethelsdorp and Grahamstown, then headed north to Graaff-Reinet and Klaarwater (later Griquatown). He arrived back in Cape Town in October 1813. This book is an account of this trip. On a subsequent trip he instructed the missionary Robert Moffat to start a mission among the Bechuana .
