Major General The Hon. A.H. Henniker-Major in 1899 obtained command, while in South Africa, of the 2nd Battalion of his regiment (Coldstream Guards) and with it took part in Lord Methuen’s advance on Kimberley, including the actions at Belmont, Modder River, and Magersfontein. He accompanied Lord Roberts in the subsequent advance to Pretoria.
