INSCRIBED presentation copy from the author, xvi, 648, lvi pp., frontispiece, 15 engraved plates, 28 woodcuts, 1 folding map, sans 1 map, contemporary tan morocco rebacked preserving spine, brown morocco lettering pieces, new endpapers. The author started his travels in Mauritius and then journeyed to the Cape in 1838 from where he travelled constantly throughout South Africa visiting numerous missions, hospitals and towns. He appears to have visited every prominent missionary in the country.
