London: 1809. Authenticated By Official Papers And Original Letters by James Moore, Esq. The Fifth Edition, Corrected published in 1809 by Joseph Johnson, London. Was a British soldier and General. He is best known for his military training reforms and for his death at the Battle of Coruna during the Peninsular War with Napoleon\'s forces. The son of a physician and the stepson of the Duke of Argyll, Moore obtained a seat in Parliament and a command in the British army upon the outbreak of war with France (1793). He served in Corsica, the West Indies, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Egypt and was knighted in 1804. In November 1808 he led the British army into Spain with orders to assist the Spanish armies in their struggle against the invading forces of Napoleon. The army had advanced to Salamanca when Moore eventually judged that the Spanish forces were beaten, and considered that to avoid disaster he must give up and retreat to the coast. Moore led a famous retreat to La Coruna where his troops defeated a French army under Marshal Soult, though Moore died of wounds suffered during the battle. His actions at La Coruna became celebrated, criticized by some and praised by others, including the Duke of Wellington. This book was written by a younger brother drawing on journals, Official papers, original Letters and other writings that Sir John Moore kept. Book with green half leather marbled boards with gilt margins, six raised bands with gilt lettering on spine, marbled endpapers, 238 pages with 89 page Appendix following a 10 page introduction and index. Interior pages show moderate foxing but otherwise remain bright and intact with no observed writing or markings except for the previously mentioned owner identification. The binding remains tight.
