A great many new Corps, both mounted and dismounted, have come into existence as a result of the flame of patriotism which swept through Great Britain and her Colonies, when, in the early days of the present war, this, the most populous and wealthiest of nations, found itself, in the eyes of the world, exposed to defeat and humiliation at the hands of two petty but aggresive South African States.

Some of these new forces were only intended to last as long as the war itself, but a large proportion have been formed with the intention that they should be permanent additions to the military strength of the country, and among the latter may be included the Liverpool Scottish Volumteers (8th Scottish V.B. King's Liverpool Regiment). In fact, this Corps may be considered as Liverpool's Volunteer contribution to the increased requirements of the nation.

It is with a view of interesting Liverpool people generally, and more especially the Scottish element of the city, that the following short sketch of the work already accomplished in the formation of the battalion, its present condition and most pressing needs are herein made public.

This opportunity has also been taken to discuss generally the attitude of the Volunteers and the public towards the increased military requirements of the country.
