"Neufeld was a German merchant in search of gum-arabic who was

captured by the Mahists in the Sudan. He was imprisoned for 12 years

in Omdurman after the fall of Khartoum and was released after the

Battle of Omdurman.

Relates an account of his capture and imprisonment by the Dervishes.

Features all major characters from the Mahdi to General Gordon.

Adbul-Allah, or the Khaleefa, had succeeded the Mahdi on his death

in 1855 and soon took most of the Sudan with an army of 50,000 dervishes."
