Two editions were published in 1936, this, by Juta and Co., and the other by The Speciality Press of South Africa. Which of these is the first Edition is not clear. Profusely illustrated in colour and b/w paintings by D. Barclay, photographs by E.J Steer, and other paintings and photographs by B.O. Carter, M.M. page, T. N. Leslie, and R.A.H. Flugge-de Smidt.
This book followed 'A First book of South African Flowers' (1928) and continued the efforts of the Wild Flower Protection Society to spread a wider knowledge of South African flowers among those for whom purely scientific books had little or no interest, and an awareness of the need to preserve species in danger of becoming extinct.
Harriet Margaret Louisa (Kensit) Bolus (1877-1970) became curator of the Bolus Herbarium, serving it devotedly for nearly 60 years, and even after her retirement, until her death in 1970. For more than 10 years, before her father-in law’s death in 1911, she had been his secretary and companion as well as his assistant in his herbarium and library. She was herself a botanist of international repute, with special interests in Mesembryanthemum and Erica.
Condition: Boards faded to a muddy green, marked, with wear to spine tips and corners. Endpapers heavily foxed with some insect damage. Text block is tight and clean, and unmarked and unfaded. Good.
