A SELECTION OF VIEWS IN EGYPT, PALESTINE, RHODES, ITALY, MINORCA, AND GIBRALTAR. From the original drawings executed during a visit to those places by the Rev. C. Willyams, A. M. With a geographical and historical description to each view, in English and French.
WILLYAMS. REV. C.
Printed for John Hearne, by J. F. Dove. London. 1822.
FIRST EDITION. Folio. (16.2 x 13.2 inches).
Illustrated with the complete compliment of 36 fine hand coloured aquatint plates. A clean and fresh copy with good wide margins. The pages measure 15 7/8 x 12 3/8 inches, compared to the copy listed in Abbey that was 15 5/8 x 12 inches.
A lovely fresh copy finely bound in late twentieth century half sprinkled dark brown calf. Spine with raised bands, each with a gilt chain decoration. Burgundy title label, gilt. Compartments fully decorated in gilt. Marbled paper on boards. Previous owner bookplate is mounted onto the front pastedown endpaper. Dual English and French text. The basis for this book is 32 of the plates issued in Rev. Willyams earlier volume, A Voyage up the Mediterranean in Her Majesty's Ship the Swiftsure which was published in 1802. The plates from that volume have been re-aquatinted and re-etched in some passage, presumably owing to wear. A beautiful and impressive work.
