A SOUVENIR OF PRETORIA, JOHANNESBURG AND KIMBERLEY. A FINE ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM

A superb album with 25 original professional sepia images measuring circa 20x15cms. mounted on stiff board pages with flexible fabric hinges. There is also one page with three smaller images. The images are titled in hand on the mount and a few are dated. The photographs are not signed. The 25 large images comprise the following:

1 x Group photograph

7 x Images of Pretoria including "Government Building", "Standard Bank", "Kruger's House" and some rural scenes.

1 x Photograph of a Waterfall in Krugersdorp

7 x Images of Johannesburg including "Commissioner Street", "Market Street", "Pritchard Street", "Hospital Entrance", "Opening of Agricultural Show" and two others

9 x Images of Kimberley including several of diamond mining scenes, De Beers etc. Some of the images are dated from 1876 to 1895.

The album measures c32x28cms. It is hand bound in textured padded leather with some hand tooling and hand sewn headbands. (see condition below). Patterned endpapers. A preliminary page has the title "A Souvenir of Pretoria, Johannesburg and Kimberley" inscribed by hand in ink, and a presentation inscription "With Frank A. Hancox' and ?McHowie's Compliments". It is uncertain if these individuals are the photographers.

Condition: The leather binding has substantial damage to the covers with large defects and most of the spine deficient. However, internally the album is in very good condition and the volume is tight with intact endpapers. Apart from the first photograph (the group of people) which has slight edge fraying, the images are all in very good to fine condition and the pages/mounts are also in nice clean condition with only a couple with some marginal staining.
