Sir David Brewster. A Treatise on the Microscope. Forming the article under that head in the seventh edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. (Edinburgh: Adam and Charles Black, 1837). viii, 193, [2] p., 14 leaves of line-cut drawings printed on recto only.

Dedicated to Henry Fox Talbot. Full discussion of all aspects of the microscope by one of the most famous scientists of the 19th century, covering all the known varieties of microscopes, as well as potential objects for examination. Marginalia in pencil from a very interested reader. An institutional cloth binding from 1907, which is a perfect candidate for rebinding: front exterior hinge cracked, spine released, rubbing to top and bottom of spine, two gatherings loose. Cancelled library book-plate, and library stamp on title page and in margin of at least one other leaf. Paper very clean throughout, and gatherings tight. Interior Good.
